The Southern New Jersey Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association held its annual Spring Social this year on April 5th at the Tavistock Country Club in Haddonfield. Guests enjoyed good food and great camaraderie with fellow Penn Staters.
Our guest speaker was Mike Missanelli. Mike is a local sports radio host and fellow Penn State alumnus. Mike talked about his recent book The Perfect Season, about the 1986 Football team that culminated an undefeated season with a Fiesta Bowl win over the vaunted Hurricanes of Miami. That win secured Penn State its second National Championship. Mike entertained us with behind the scenes anecdotes of that remarkable season and especially the winning game against the mighty Hurricanes. Mike also took questions from the floor and gave his prognostication for the upcoming season. He graciously stayed afterwards to sign copies of his book.
As is tradition, many wonderful Penn State items, including a coveted Joe Paterno signed football, were auctioned. All proceeds from the auction went to support Southern New Jersey Chapter charities.
The Spring Social also serves as our annual chapter meeting. Our president, Jay Plunk lead us through the meeting and recognized the efforts of the board members. At the end, the 2009 Board of Directors was elected for the 2009-10 year.
The evening was capped perfectly with a dish of Penn State Creamery Ice Cream. The flavor? Peachy Paterno, of course. Special thanks goes to chapter vice president, Walt Shull for making the trip to University Park to pick up the ice cream.
